Emblem of contemporary design, it is present in the permanent collections of the largest international museums, from the Milan Triennale to the MoMA in New York. S-Chair has a dark painted metal structure; the iconic original version is covered in swamp straw; further variants available are wicker or fixed upholstery in a selection of leathers and fabrics from the collection. For the swamp straw version, the weaving process is entirely manual: a meticulous operation that requires about 6 hours of work. Born in Tunisia, Tom Dixon moved to England in ’63. His turbulent and rebellious soul causes him to abandon his studies at the Chelsea School of Art to investigate his own creative vein and a way of personal expression through the use of recycled materials. In those years he started the “Space” laboratory: a think-tank, a free and independent space where artists and designers can collaborate and influence each other on a creative and design level. It was in this fruitful period that Tom Dixon began his collaboration with Cappellini, for which he created the iconic S-Chair. In the 1990s, the “Space” laboratory was transformed into a real design studio: Dixon entered the Olympus of all-round designers and its name began to circulate as an internationally recognized brand. His commercial successes led him to be appointed Head of Design by Habitat, in 1998, for which he assumes the position of Creative Director. In the meantime he collaborates with institutions and individuals, dedicating himself to a truly remarkable number of projects and creating a series of pieces destined to remain unsurpassed in terms of popularity and appreciation. In 2000, Dixon was awarded the prestigious appointment of Member of the Order of the British Empire, conferred on him by Queen Elizabeth. Dixon’s works are included in the permanent collections of major museums including the Victoria & Albert Museum, MoMA in New York and Tokyo and the Center Pompidou
